Transfer

Also known as: self-transfer, wallet transfer

Moving crypto between addresses or wallets you control — generally not a disposal, though transfer fees can affect your base cost.

Definition

A transfer is moving crypto from one address to another. Moving between wallets you own is not a disposal and triggers no gain or loss, but the network fee paid can be a cost worth recording. The difficulty is that exchanges and tools can mistake a self-transfer for a disposal, so labelling transfers correctly is key to an accurate base cost and avoiding phantom gains.

Example

You move 1 BTC from a Luno account to your own Ledger hardware wallet. No disposal occurs, but the R50 network fee is a cost you should record.

Jurisdiction notes

  • South Africa: Transfers between your own wallets are not disposals in South Africa, but mislabelled transfers can create phantom gains in reports.
