Marginal tax rate

Also known as: marginal rate, top tax bracket

The income-tax rate that applies to your next rand of taxable income — the rate at which crypto revenue income and included gains are taxed.

Definition

Your marginal tax rate is the rate on your highest band of taxable income under the progressive personal income tax tables. Crypto income taxed as revenue (such as trading profits or rewards) is taxed at your marginal rate. Capital gains are not taxed at a flat rate either: the included portion (after the inclusion rate) is added to taxable income and also taxed at your marginal rate.

Example

If your marginal rate is 39%, then R10,000 of crypto trading profit adds roughly R3,900 of tax, and any included capital gain is taxed at the same 39%.

Jurisdiction notes

  • South Africa: Crypto revenue income and the included portion of capital gains are taxed at your personal marginal rate under the SA tax tables.
