1099-DA

Also known as: Form 1099-DA, 1099 DA

A US tax form on which brokers report customers' digital-asset proceeds and, increasingly, cost basis to the IRS.

Definition

Form 1099-DA is the US information return through which digital-asset brokers report customer transactions to the IRS, with proceeds reporting beginning for transactions from 2025 and cost-basis reporting phasing in afterward. It mirrors how traditional brokers report securities. It is a US instrument and does not apply to SARS reporting, but it is part of the global trend toward exchanges reporting crypto activity to tax authorities.

Example

A US-resident user of a US exchange receives a 1099-DA summarising their digital-asset proceeds for the year, copied to the IRS.

Jurisdiction notes

  • South Africa: The 1099-DA is a US broker reporting form; it does not apply to SARS, which receives data via local reporting and CARF.
